What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that we go in and out of throughout the day.
Have you ever found yourself sitting at your desk looking out of the window daydreaming and after a few moments you realise what you have been doing and bring yourself back to your task at hand? Have you ever been so engrossed in reading a book that you weren't aware of the time lapsed and people around you? Well, in both of these examples you were in a light trance/hypnotic state that made you focus on one thing ignoring everything else around you. This is natural.
Hypnotherapy uses this natural ability to relax an individual, narrow their focus and bypass the conscious part of the mind to work on the subconscious for therapeutic purposes.
So, hypnosis is an altered state of mind brought about by using different techniques. It enhances concentration and responsiveness to suggestion. Relaxation is important in hypnosis but the two are not the same. The power of suggestion is used everywhere - in adverts, slogans, by the media that are good at exploiting this. In fact, most advertisers and businesses use psychologists, anthropologists and other professionals specialising in the human psyche, to make you behave the way they want you to for their own gains (even if it's to sell you a product you didn't need until they convinced you, you did and your happiness depended on having it). Hypnotherapy uses the power of positive suggestion to make a positive difference to the client.
The trance-like state is so natural and we go in and out of it throughout the day. The difference between every-day trance states and hypnotherapy is that the latter is performed for therapeutic purposes with beneficial suggestions to help you achieve your goals or deal with an issue etc.
A lot of things that we come across every day go undetected - they slip 'under the radar'. In fact, we're only consciously aware of a very small number of things. This is good, as - if our survival depended on us
consciously regulating our own body temperature, noticing every sound and sight around us, always consciously remembering to breathe, we wouldn't live for long. In short, it's this 'mysterious' part of the mind that hypnotherapy accesses to help us make positive changes.
